VfL Wolfsburg star Christian Eriksen shockingly collapsed during the second half of Denmark's friendly against Ukraine in Odense on Sunday evening.
With Denmark leading 2-1 in the second half, Eriksen suddenly fell to the ground and lay motionless, leaving both teammates and supporters stunned as silence descended over the stadium.
Relief swept through the crowd when the 34-year-old regained consciousness and was able to leave the pitch under his own power before being taken to hospital for further examinations.
Denmark team doctor Morten Boesen confirmed afterwards that Eriksen was “doing well” under the circumstances.
The 34-year-old suffered a similar collapse during Denmark’s Euro 2021 opener against Finland and has since been fitted with an implanted heart-regulating device, which appeared to function as intended.
“Christian is doing well and walked off the pitch by himself. As I see it, the pacemaker responded as it should,” Boesen said in a statement released by the Danish Football Association.
“He was briefly unconscious, but regained consciousness very quickly, and we were quickly in contact with him,” he added.
"He will now undergo further examinations at the hospital to determine what caused the incident. We are in ongoing contact with him and the doctors at the hospital.
“But Christian is doing well, and he asked me to send his regards to all the players and tell them that he was okay.”
With players, staff and supporters deeply shaken by the incident, the decision was quickly made to abandon the match.
