Christian Eriksen was once again at the centre of concern during a Denmark match. This Sunday, in the friendly against Ukraine, the Wolfsburg midfielder collapsed unconscious on the pitch, prompting immediate alarm among players and supporters alike.
The Danish FA have since confirmed that he is “conscious and, given the circumstances, well”.
It happened in the 66th minute, when the 34-year-old suddenly went to ground after clutching his chest. Medical staff reacted instantly, and once again Eriksen was shielded by a ring of teammates and opponents as treatment was carried out before he was taken off the pitch.
The referee eventually brought the match to a close in the 77th minute.
It is worth remembering that five years ago, at Euro 2020 (played in 2021) against Finland, the Denmark captain was involved in one of the most distressing moments in international football, suffering a cardiac arrest that left the football world fearing the worst. In a remarkable turn of events, he returned to playing months later with an implantable cardioverter defibrillator fitted.
This time, in a friendly between two nations who both missed out on World Cup qualification via the play-offs, Denmark claimed a 2-1 win that ultimately meant little. A fine goal from Patrick Dorgu and another from fellow full-back Joakim Maehle were enough to secure victory, despite a strike from Viktor Tsyhankov for Ukraine.
