FIFA imposed a transfer ban on Corinthians on Thursday morning over an unpaid fee to Philadelphia Union for José Martínez. The club are barred from registering new players for up to three transfer windows, a sanction that would be lifted if the debt is settled.

According to Globo.com, the outstanding sum is about US$ 1.5 million, roughly R$ 7.54 million at current rates.

Martínez arrived in August 2024 as part of a recruitment drive led by former president Augusto Melo. Corinthians agreed a fee of around R$ 11 million and have only paid part of it.

With most of the payment outstanding, the American club took the dispute to FIFA, which reviewed the contract.

The club could face further sanctions in the coming days because of an active debt with Talleres of Argentina over midfielder Rodrigo Garro, valued at about R$ 42 million. Corinthians also owe around R$ 6 million to Midtjylland of Denmark relating to the purchase of midfielder Charles.
