Despite tightening finances, Grêmio have signed 30-year-old midfielder Danilo Barbosa until December 2028 after he terminated his deal with Al-Ula of Saudi Arabia. He joins as a free agent under the club’s new wage cap.
According to Gremistas.net, he will receive a signing-on fee paid in instalments during his spell at the club. His monthly wage in Porto Alegre is about R$500,000, with the signing-on and charges lifting the monthly cost to around R$700,000.
A long-standing target and well regarded by head coach Luis Castro, he arrives viewed as a first-choice option this season while still fitting the new salary ceiling aimed at curbing expenditure.
His addition follows the departure of Argentine Leo Pérez, loaned to Racing until June 2027, which thinned options in his position and created room for a new signing.
Barbosa previously worked with Castro at Botafogo in 2022 and 2023, and has former team-mates in the current squad, with goalkeeper Weverton, right-back Marcos Rocha and forward Matheus Nascimento all having played alongside him.
He can also operate at right-sided centre-back, and last season at Al-Ula he featured in 31 of 34 matches as a defender.
