David Bruce has been appointed Sheffield Wednesday’s CEO on a landmark day for the club, with the EFL removing the threat of a 15-point deduction next season.

According to Sunderland Echo, Bruce bade farewell during last month’s Nottingham Forest game, then left his role under Kyril Louis-Dreyfus after an organisational restructure.

American consortium Arise Capital Partners completed the takeover shortly before kick-off and has placed an emphasis on improving supporter relations.

On the pitch, Wednesday beat West Bromwich Albion 2-1. Nathaniel Chalobah and captain Liam Palmer struck in quick succession before Karlan Grant replied late on.

The result meant Wednesday ended the season on zero points, wiping out an earlier 18-point deduction and avoiding becoming the first EFL club to finish a campaign with a negative total.

Relegation had already been confirmed, yet Hillsborough was buoyant as the club looked to reset under new ownership and leadership.

Bruce returned to Sunderland in July 2023, playing a central role in the business operation during off-field progress and their return to the Premier League. He helped secure deals with Delaware North, Fanatics and hummel, and oversaw investments to strengthen the commercial platform and matchday experience.

He was credited with improving supporter relations and shaping the Til the End ethos. He departs with long-term projects advanced, including future hummel kits, the Legends Way development and a planned North America tour. He will stay through a defined transition, with Tom Burwell as interim CEO while a permanent successor is sought.
