Fiorentina and former Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea continues to poke fun at his old rivals at Manchester City following the confirmation that they have been found guilty of all charges related to serious breaches of the Premier League’s financial rules over a nine-year period: ‘So, we’re talking again…’

On Tuesday, the Premier League confirmed that Manchester City had been found guilty “of all charges related to serious breaches of the league’s financial rules and the majority of charges in relation to its failure to co-operate with the league’s investigation.”

An independent commission has found that City arranged ‘sham’ contracts with a number of its commercial partners, that the club filed misstated accounts and concealed the true state of its finances from auditors, that the club was significantly in breach of the Premier League and UEFA’s spending limits and that the club failed to commit to its duties of co-operation and good faith towards the league during its investigation.

These charges were originally brought forwards in 2023 following an investigation into the seasons from 2009-10 until 2017-18.

Manchester City confirmed on Tuesday in its own statement that the club “will pursue the appeal avenues open to it, on the basis that the opinion contains clear material errors, of law, principle and fact, and is unsafe.”

Much has been made of the potential punishments that City could face if these guilty verdicts are upheld. There has been talk of unprecedented fines, points deductions and potentially even titles being stripped.

When news broke last week that City had been found guilty on 114 of the 115 charges that were brought against them, Fiorentina and former Manchester United goalkeeper De Gea jokingly asked: “So, let’s talk. How many Premier League titles have I won then?”

He brought the topic back up for discussion on Tuesday evening following the Premier League and Manchester City statements, taking to X to post: “So, we’re talking again …”

Well, to answer De Gea’s question literally, the answer is one: The 2012-13 Premier League title that United won in Sir Alex Ferguson’s final season in charge.

However, speaking hypothetically, De Gea is also referring to the Premier League titles that City won in 2011-12 and in 2017-18, when United finished second in both seasons. So, the answer that De Gea is looking for is three, although there are countless legal and bureaucratic reasons as to why United are unlikely to be retrospectively awarded those titles.
