Dennis Cirkin has undergone surgery on a long-standing wrist problem and shared images from hospital after Sunderland’s historic season.

The player said in a post that "Metal out, on the mend #wristtape4life" and showed his arm in a sling alongside what appeared to be metalwork removed during the procedure.

The 24-year-old was on the bench against Chelsea as a remarkable final-day win at the Stadium of Light secured European football for the first time since 1973-74. The wrist issue has persisted since last season in the Championship, and he wore protection for a lengthy spell.

In a campaign disrupted by injuries, he made just eight Premier League appearances as Sunderland finished seventh and qualified for the Europa League.

Cirkin remains a popular figure, having helped the club climb from League One to the Premier League. He joined from Tottenham Hotspur in 2021 and was part of Alex Neil’s promotion winners.

His future is uncertain this summer, with his contract situation one to watch as preparations begin for Premier League and Europa League commitments.
