Real Madrid announced on Tuesday evening that they had bid €150m for Julian Alvarez from city rivals Atletico Madrid rejected. However with the move increasingly being seen as an election ploy from President Florentino Perez, the latest coming out of Spain would appear to back up that idea.
Last Thursday, Perez promised that the following Tuesday he would make a €150m bid for a star player if he were re-elected, something that duly occurred on Sunday night with a 65% majority. The move was met with derision from Atletico Madrid, who noted that they were not considering or evaluating any offers for Alvarez. Los Blancos are not thought to be considering a second bid.

Nevertheless, the version of events from Atletico’s side of things appears to be differing greatly from the one in Real Madrid’s statement. Marca say that Real Madrid did make a phone call to Atletico, but that it was not Florentino Perez, and that the €150m figure was not mentioned. Los Blancos enquired about Alvarez but were told that he is not for sale, and Real Madrid did not take the conversation further, although they were thanked for communicating directly with the club, unlike Barcelona.
Cadena Cope add that Atletico said the only way to get the deal done was to pay his €500m release clause.

Publicly, Atletico laughed off Real Madrid’s official statement on the offer, and made it clear they ‘did not thank Real Madrid for anything’, as well as asking Los Blancos to stop ‘stealing’ their academy players. The motive for their irritation was that as soon as the phone was put down, Real Madrid published their statement, and mentioned the €150m figure. Their feeling was that the whole process was disingenous.
