Real Madrid on Tuesday revealed they had submitted a 150 million euros bid to Atletico Madrid for Julian Alvarez, which was rejected.
The revelation ended days of speculation after Florentino Perez, re-elected as president, had teased a marquee signing.
Atletico thanked the proposal within the clubs' good relations and declined it, citing the player's release clause.
Alvarez has been regularly linked with Barcelona, and the shape of Madrid's forward line remains unresolved.
According to AFP, Real Madrid have approved the arrival of Ibrahima Konaté on a deal through 2030, after his Liverpool exit was announced. On 3 June Perez said the France international would be his first signing if re-elected, along with a pledge to bring in coach José Mourinho.
