Dibu Martínez has raised doubts over his Argentina future, saying in a social media post in the early hours of Tuesday that he could step aside after defeat to Spain in the 2026 World Cup final.
He wrote that he had dreamed of winning the trophy again, bringing it back to Argentina and making history once more.
He added that the pain was hard to explain, that he needed to reflect on how to move forward and whether it was time to step aside. He also apologised, saying he had tried his utmost to help his country and team-mates.
Across the tournament he conceded eight goals in eight matches, one each against Jordan, Switzerland, England and Spain, and two apiece versus Cabo Verde and Egypt.
Despite that mixed campaign he delivered a standout display in the final, making 11 saves to keep Argentina in the contest.
Since his Argentina debut he has played 67 times, with 51 wins, 10 draws and six defeats. This was his first tournament with the national team that he did not win, having lifted the Copa América in 2021 and 2024, the Finalissima and the Qatar 2022 World Cup.
