Paulo Dybala had the chance to leave Roma in the summer, as Juventus and Napoli tested the waters, and the renewal talks weren’t smooth. However, Gian Piero Gasperini ultimately convinced him to stick around and accept a peculiar contract, La Gazzetta dello Sport informs.

La Joya was in limbo for months, as his deal was about to expire. The Giallorossi were adamant about protecting themselves against his injury woes and reducing his base salary.

Juventus and Napoli contacted his camp to learn about the situation and his request, but Roma eventually came to terms with him after strong input from their coach. The Argentine accepted a 70 percent pay cut down to €2.2M wages. However, he can pocket €2M more through easy-to-activate bonuses: €100k every time he starts and plays at least half, up to 20 appearances, and then €150k once he reaches that threshold.

La Joya will also earn pretty hefty add-ons every five goal contributions. He’s been remarkably healthy early on, logging almost full minutes and dishing out four assists already, but he has yet to score.

Our Take on Dybala, Napoli, and Juventus

Despite some scuttlebutt, his permanence was always the most likely outcome, given his bond with the fan base and their gaffer. It was probably simple standard due diligence by the suitors, considering his caliber and their ties to him. His entourage surely did its part in pursuing outside interest to drive a hard bargain and build leverage, but the contract benefits the club massively. Still, it’d be ironic if he avoided injuries for a change, so the Giallorossi would still wind up giving him a pretty lofty sum.
