Eight years of FC Bayern! Emotional Goretzka farewell

It was a scene full of emotion at the Allianz Arena: after eight years at FC Bayern, Leon Goretzka was given a fitting send-off at Saturday’s home match against 1. FC Köln. Even before kick-off, it was clear that this afternoon would be a very special one for the 31-year-old.

Even before the game, Goretzka received flowers and a collage of his most successful Bayern moments to great applause. Coach Vincent Kompany had announced in advance that the midfielder would once again start from the beginning in his last home game – not as a gift, but „because he has earned it“.

And the fans provided a goosebump moment afterwards. When Goretzka was substituted in the final phase, the spectators in the sold-out Allianz Arena rose from their seats in unison. Minutes of applause, loud chants and a large banner in the stands made it clear how important the international player is in Munich.

The emotional farewell was no coincidence. Since his move from FC Schalke 04 to FC Bayern in 2018, Goretzka has shaped an extremely successful era at the record champions. Together with Joshua Kimmich, he formed the heart of the midfield for years. The highlight of his time in Munich was undoubtedly the treble in 2020.

Not always undisputed

However, the past few years in particular have not always been easy for Goretzka. He lost his starting place at times, but fought his way back again and again and was appreciated internally for his attitude and mentality. Kompany recently even described him as a „role model“ for the team.

Goretzka was visibly moved after the game, thanked the fans several times and clapped his fellow players and supporters for a long time. After the final whistle, he was also allowed to raise the championship trophy to the sky.

The midfielder’s future is still officially unclear, but a move abroad is considered likely. One thing is already certain, however: Leon Goretzka is leaving big shoes to fill at FC Bayern, both in sporting and personal terms.
