Eray Cömert and Unai Núñez are fit again and in contention to bolster Valencia’s defence at San Mames on Sunday against Athletic Club. Carlos Corberán could reshuffle his back line.

According to AS, both players were already available last Saturday and might have featured against Atlético de Madrid, but the coach kept faith with the Tárrega and Pepelu pairing.

Núñez had become a mainstay since his winter window arrival, featuring at centre-back and at right-back. He was injured at Mestalla against Celta, missed the trips to Elche and Mallorca, then returned to play 19 minutes versus Girona.

Cömert has been one of the season’s surprises. After a summer in which he was offered out following his spell at Valladolid, he began as a reserve and played only three games until late January, then seized his chance amid injuries to Diakhaby and Foulquier before being sidelined at Elche.

The Tárrega and Pepelu partnership showed many deficiencies against Atlético, and Corberán could turn back to his preferred centre-backs for this important fixture. It remains unclear whether Núñez would start at right-back or in the middle.
