Everton players and staff are reportedly still in a ‘state of shock’ following the sacking of Brian Sorensen according to reports.
Sorensen was sacked by Everton at the beginning of February after a poor start to the season.
Brian Sorensen was manager of Everton for just over four years.
The dismissal came as a surprise to fans as despite being poor this season the team is still relatively safe from relegation.
A report out of Everton has said that players and staff were informed of the decision in an early meeting on February 3rd.
The mood around the club is a somber one according to that same report, with players and staff alike shocked by the departure of their long-serving manager.
Sorensen himself will have been surprised by the decision which came just days after Everton beat Aston Villa in the WSL.
The Toffees found an immediate replacement for their Danish boss. Everton’s U18 coach Scott Phelan will take over on an interim basis until the end of this season.
Despite everyone at the club being in shock, there is no time to mourn for Everton.
The team from Merseyside are back in action this weekend with a clash against London City Lionesses.
Although Everton are currently three places above the threat of relegation, there isn’t much between the bottom four teams.
Just four points separate Liverpool in bottom and the Toffees in 9th. Leicester, who are also below Everton in the standings, have a game in hand over their relegation rivals.
That game in hand is against Arsenal however and they may struggle to pick up a win at the Emirates in April.
Only one team is facing relegation this season due to the expansion of the WSL. The club that finishes bottom of the league will play against third in WSL2 for a right to compete in the top flight next season.
If Everton can beat London City Lionesses this weekend they could go seven points clear of Liverpool which would surely secure their survival with nine games to go.
