David Bruce has been appointed Sheffield Wednesday’s chief executive on a significant day for the club.
According to Sunderland Echo, the Owls completed a sale to American consortium Arise Capital Partners, who have prioritised fan relations, shortly before kick-off, and the EFL removed the risk of a 15-point deduction next season.
On the pitch, Wednesday beat West Bromwich Albion 2-1, only their second Championship win of the season. Nathaniel Chalobah and captain Liam Palmer struck in quick succession before Karlan Grant replied late. The result ensured they finished on zero points, erasing an earlier 18-point deduction and avoiding becoming the first EFL club to end a season below zero.
Bruce was at Hillsborough for the occasion and takes the role after bidding farewell at Sunderland during last month’s Nottingham Forest game. His exit followed an organisational restructure and he earned praise for his approach to supporter engagement under Kyril Louis-Dreyfus.
He returned to Sunderland in July 2023, leading the business operation through significant development and contributing to the club’s off-field progress and return to the Premier League.
He leaves long-term projects in train, including future hummel kits, the Legends Way development and a planned North America tour. Sunderland said he would remain during a defined transition, with Tom Burwell installed as interim CEO while a permanent successor is sought.
