Chris Powell has become Jack Wilshere's assistant at Kenilworth Road
Sky Sports pundit and EFL expert Don Goodman has heaped praise on Luton Town for the "wise" appointment of Chris Powell as part of Jack Wilshere's new-look coaching setup at Kenilworth Road.
It has been a rather busy October international break for the Hatters, despite the fact they were one of a handful of League One sides to partake in a two-week hiatus from league action due to various international call-ups.
However, before the current break, it was confirmed that Matt Bloomfield had been handed his P45 following a 2-0 away defeat at league leaders Stevenage, with Luton currently enduring an underwhelming run of just two wins in seven games, despite being tipped by many to make an immediate return to the Championship after back-to-back relegations.
Bloomfield had previously earned a reputation as one of the lower leagues' most highly-rated managers after enjoying relative success at both Colchester United and Wycombe Wanderers. However, he was unable to match the level of consistency he achieved at Adams Park before moving to Bedfordshire in January as an initial long-term replacement for the current Middlesbrough boss, Rob Edwards.
However, with Luton currently residing in 11th in the third tier with a tally of 16 points from their first 11 outings, CEO Gary Sweet moved to appoint ex-Hatters academy player, Wilshere, in what is the former England international's first full-time managerial role.
Yet, whilst the appointment of a one-time Premier League 'wonderkid' has got most people talking, so has the appointment of Powell as his assistant, with the 56-year-old held in very high regard within the managerial circuit.
Powell has banked plenty of experience during his time and a player, manager and assistant, with his latest role coming just two weeks after joining Mat Sadler's setup at League Two leaders, Walsall, on an interim basis.
The Lambeth-born man had previously worked under Danny Rohl at Sheffield Wednesday, where he was a popular figure with supporters at Hillsborough in a rather testing environment, as well as spending just under four years in Gareth Southgate's backroom setup with the England national team, during which the Three Lions made the UEFA Euro 2020 final and quarter-finals of the FIFA World Cup 2022 amongst other assistant-based duties at Tottenham Hotspur, ADO Den Haag and Leicester City.
On top of this, Powell has also managed at Charlton Athletic, Huddersfield Town and Southend United, which included the Addicks being crowned League One champions during his first full season in charge at the Valley, accumulating 101 points in the process.
As a result, the aforementioned Goodman had nothing but praise for the Luton hierarchy following confirmation of Powell's link-up with Wilshere at Kenilworth Road.
"Wherever Chris Powell has been as both a player, manager, assistant manager and coach, he has been super popular," Goodman exclusively told Football League World.
"He's a very likeable personality, and that's an important part of being part of a coaching team. He's got a vast array of experience, as I've already alluded to.
"Jack Wilshere, in his first job as a manager/head coach, it was always going to be very important that he got someone in with massive experience," he explained.
"I think Chris Powell ticks every single box. It's a very wise choice by both Luton Town and Jack Wilshere."
The aforementioned pairing of Wilshere and Powell is one which certainly could propel Luton up the standings fairly quickly, especially with the League One table still being fairly congested in October.
Wilshere has already spoken about his connection to the club in the past, and this, coupled with a forward-thinking style of play, is a combination that will have plenty of supporters on-side, especially when assessing the pool of talent and experience at his disposal.
As Goodman alluded to, Powell is an extremely popular figure with former clubs and the players he has worked with, which is down to the positive and winning culture he has helped foster in the confines of various training grounds and dressing rooms.
Wilshere also has the added motivation of proving a point to Norwich City, who opted to appoint Liam Manning rather than promote the 33-year-old from his previous role as interim boss, despite being wanted in the role by many of his former squad.
