Luton Town have confirmed the appointment of former Arsenal and England midfielder Jack Wilshere following the sacking of Matt Bloomfield, with the 33-year-old set to undertake his first job as a manager in professional football at Kenilworth Road immediately.

Luton have begun their first season back in the third tier since the 2018/19 season in difficult form.

Many expected the Hatters, who played Premier League football as recently as 2024, to be one of the runaway contenders for the league title, but so far, it has not transpired that way.

Under the guidance of former Wycombe Wanderers boss Bloomfield, Luton sit 11th in the league table, with five wins, one draw, and five losses, epitomising the inconsistent nature of the current team's form.

This led Bloomfield to part ways with the Hatters, who immediately put together a three-man shortlist of candidates for the role, including Leyton Orient's Richie Wellens, Luke Williams and Wilshere, as exclusively revealed by Football League World.

However, it has been Wilshere who has been given the nod at Kenilworth Road, and Luton fans will no doubt be optimistic and excited over the prospect of Wilshere, given that he is still a relatively unknown quantity in senior management.

Football League World's Luton fan pundit, Simon Mills, has shared his opinion on whether he would be open to loaning some of Arsenal's exciting youngsters following the appointment of Wilshere, and the connection he has with the Gunners.

Simon said, "As with anything, I think that the player coming through the door needs to be the right player, with a clear goal in mind of what we want them to do.

"I don't think we should bring in players for the sake of it because they are coming from Arsenal. However, I think making use of that connection between Arsenal and Luton Town now would be wise.

"It would more than likely gets our foot in the door on some potential players who might not have been interested in a loan with us.

"I think everyone is feeling really positively about the appointment and everything that has come with it, so hopefully we can get some of Arsenal's best and brightest to help us out in the future."

Jack Wilshere must hit the ground running at Luton Town before he has the chance to use his Arsenal connections at Luton Town

Wilshere has prior experience in management and coaching prior to taking the Luton job.

He'd spend two years as head coach of Arsenal's under-18 squad before joining Championship outfit Norwich City in October 2024 as a first-team coach under Johannes Hoff Thorup.

Following Thorup's dismissal in the latter stages of last season, Wilshere took charge of two games at Norwich, a 0-0 draw with Middlesbrough and a 4-2 victory over already-relegated Cardiff City.

Before Wilshere can think about using his connections at Arsenal to sign some of their best youngsters, he must focus on the immediate task at hand, and that's turning around the form at Kenilworth Road.

The Hatters have just one win in their last six outings across all competitions, and have the chance to turn to winning ways when they host Mansfield Town on Saturday, which will be Wilshere's first game in charge.

Though Luton supporters have lapped up the appointment of Wilshere, the reality is that he will only be afforded little time and patience. The expectation and demand of going straight back up is clear and the former England midfield star needs to hit the ground running in the dugout, though the Hatters' promotion efforts could, of course, be bolstered by some potential Arsenal acquisitions in January.
