Corinthians lost 2-0 to Platense in the final round of the Libertadores group stage. According to Meu Timao, Fernando Diniz played down boos aimed at striker Yuri Alberto as he left the pitch.
The number nine was withdrawn at 37 minutes of the second half, with Pedro Raul sent on. The forward had endured another difficult night before the change.
Speaking in his press conference, Diniz called the reaction natural and said Yuri, who started young at Santos, has the toughness to cope. He added that recent events made such a moment possible and that the striker will come out stronger.
He also stressed the mutual affection between player and supporters, and said the relationship needs to be reset so things move in good time.
Alberto’s standing with fans dipped after he revealed he wants to leave during the World Cup transfer window, a remark made after a 1-0 win over Barra in the Copa do Brasil. He has since faced sustained criticism.
If his request is granted, Saturday could be his final appearance for Corinthians. They visit Grêmio at 17:30 at Arena do Grêmio in the 18th round of the Campeonato Brasileiro.
