The focus will also be on the expiring contracts of CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen, Chief Sports Officer Max Eberl and Sports Director Christoph Freund, which all expire in the summer of 2027

Eberl is under particular scrutiny

In contrast to Dreesen and Freund , an extension for Eberl is by no means a given. The former Gladbach and Leipzig manager has been under particular scrutiny internally since he took office in March 2024

There has been repeated criticism of his transfer policy and negotiating style. According to SPORT1, Eberl has been accused internally of allowing himself to be influenced too quickly in talks with advisors and not negotiating consistently enough

The expensive contract extensions of recent months in particular are apparently continuing to cause discussions within the club’s management, with critics accusing him of being too cuddly and thus causing unnecessarily high costs

The squad planning ahead of the current season is also being criticized internally, with insiders even speaking of a „sometimes chaotic“ transfer phase, according to reports

Despite the internal discussions, Eberl has also received support. In particular, the signing of Vincent Kompany is highly credited to him. In addition, the transfer of Michael Olise is considered a great success for the sporting director

Uli Hoeneß recently emphasized on DAZN: „This was a decision that basically goes back to Max.“ An important signal in FC Bayern’s internal power structure

After all, the question of who is held responsible for which decisions and successes also plays a major role at Säbener Straße

Eberl does not currently have to fear for his job, as the club’s statutes stipulate that a possible future can only be discussed one year before the end of the contract

Nevertheless, it is clear that the coming summer of transfers is likely to point the way forward for the sporting director. Bayern bosses want to see whether Eberl can successfully implement the announced squad adjustments – including possible sales and targeted reinforcements

There is a need for action, particularly in the offensive and at right-back, while the salary structure is to be more tightly controlled in future

This will give Eberl the chance to prove himself in the long term, but it is also clear that the coming months could be decisive in determining whether he gains the long-term trust of the powerful club management at FC Bayern.
