Flaco López is shining for Palmeiras this season, and his goal celebrations have become a talking point. After the 2-1 defeat to Vasco on Wednesday, images suggested he had switched his routine.
According to Globo.com, the Argentine actually repeated his usual JL gesture, despite crossing his arms with index fingers and thumbs raised. The fan debate stems from the move’s likeness to Jesse Lingard’s celebration, with the Englishman now at arch-rivals Corinthians.
The fuss arose partly from their shared initials, Jose López and Jesse Lingard. During his Corinthians unveiling, Lingard said he did it first, that López can keep using it, but that the celebration remains his.
López has distanced himself from controversy, focusing on scoring for Palmeiras. That goal kept him among Brazil’s leading scorers in 2026.
TikTok is his main source of ideas, and he rolled out a dance with Luighi after his latest strike. In the first leg of the Paulistão final against Novorizontino, he scored the only goal then mimed playing guitar, inspired by GIMS’s track Tout Donner, which is trending on the platform.
There have been provocations too. In the Paulistão group stage against Corinthians, he hit the winner then launched a flying kick at the corner flag at Neo Química Arena, sparking a brief flare-up.
Supporters can expect further variations. López should be available to Abel Ferreira for Palmeiras’s next match, against Mirassol on Sunday at 18:30 Brasília time.
