Flamengo dismissed Filipe Luís in the early hours of Tuesday, a move that surprised both coach and supporters. Despite a sluggish start to the year, his overall record compares favourably with recent predecessors.
According to Coluna Do Fla, Renato Gaúcho posted 72.8% from 38 matches, narrowly ahead of Filipe Luís on 70.6% across 101, with others returning Dorival Júnior 66.7% from 43, Paulo Sousa 66.7% from 32, Tite 64.8% from 70, Domènec Torrent 64.1% from 26, Rogério Ceni 63% from 54, Jorge Sampaoli 60.7% from 39 and Vítor Pereira 58.3% from 20. Club president Bap recently learned Filipe Luís held talks with Chelsea during renewal discussions and that he was unreachable for about three days.
The relationship between the coach and Bap had begun to fray in December 2025. Disagreements over how his new contract was handled and the squad’s earlier-than-planned return for 2026 added strain.
On the pitch, performances fell short and the situation became untenable. Bap wanted to remove him after the Recopa Sudamericana defeat to Lanús last Thursday, 26.
The decision was initially delayed because a replacement had not yet been lined up. Flamengo now have a deal practically in place with Portuguese coach Leonardo Jardim, formerly of Cruzeiro.
He is expected to arrive in Rio de Janeiro on Tuesday, 02.
