Sunderland are close to agreeing a long-term contract with 19-year-old goalkeeper Matty Young, according to Sunderland Echo. He is viewed as a potential future number one.

Talks are at an advanced stage, with most key terms verbally agreed. The deal would be for four years with an option of a further 12 months. It will only be final once signed.

Young, at the club since the age of seven, signed his first professional terms in November 2023. He has impressed on loan at Darlington, where he was young player of the season, then across two seasons with Salford City.

He has made 75 league appearances for Salford. He has also represented England at under-19, under-20 and under-21 level.

He is not expected to return to Salford next season, with a new environment seen as the next step. Plymouth Argyle are understood to be keen, and his next move will be chosen to keep him playing regularly at a challenging level.

Cardiff City and MK Dons have also been linked with the England youth international, who has been compared to England number one and fellow Academy of Light graduate Jordan Pickford.

Robin Roefs has established himself as number one, Anthony Patterson is weighing up his future, and Melker Ellborg is part of the senior group. The proposed new deal for Young reflects long-term planning under sporting director Florent Ghisolfi, with another loan likely in the short term.
