Florentino Pérez addressed the Real Madrid dressing room at the Allianz Arena after the match against Bayern, delivering a stark verdict on a barren campaign. He told the squad that one season without silverware is a failure and two are intolerable.
According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, he thanked the players but called the season a major disappointment, addressing the squad and staff with a stern demeanour.
Álvaro Arbeloa will stay in the dugout until the end of the season while Pérez assesses candidates for next year. He did not discuss potential departures but said the squad have fallen short of expectations.
Only Trent Alexander-Arnold started in Munich, with Mastantuono on in stoppage time and Carreras and Huijsen unused. Madrid spent almost 180 million euros on those four, plus 60 million on Endrick, who was loaned to Lyon in January by Xabi Alonso.
Madrid face a second straight season without significant silverware, although they lifted the UEFA Super Cup and Intercontinental in 2024-25 from finals earned under Carlo Ancelotti in 2022-23. They had not suffered two such seasons since 2008-09 and 2009-10.
Across the last two campaigns they have lost 27 of 107 matches, about one in four, after two in 68 under Ancelotti. This season comprises 49 matches, 28 under Xabi Alonso and 21 under Arbeloa.
Pérez urged the team to finish with dignity. Six league matches remain, including the clásico at Camp Nou on 10 May, before the season ends on 24 May at home to Athletic Club.
