France’s blind football team defend their European title in Strasbourg this week, from 17 to 23 August. Two years ago they claimed Paralympic gold by the Eiffel Tower.
According to Le Progres, matching the Paris 2024 atmosphere could be difficult. Head coach Toussaint Akpweh trusts Alsace and Strasbourg to lift his players in a 1,000-seat arena beside the European Parliament.
No one has forgotten the late summer nights in Paris that culminated on Saturday 7 September, when Frédéric Villeroux scored the decisive penalty. France beat world champions Argentina to secure the Paralympic title.
Since then, Akpweh has intentionally skipped all international fixtures, choosing to spend a year strengthening other areas of work with his senior players.
Focus now turns to Strasbourg and the defence of their crown, as the hosts look to feed off home support.
