German outlets have given prominent coverage to the official confirmation of Edin Terzic’s move to Athletic, the former Borussia Dortmund coach well known in his homeland after losing a Champions League final to Real Madrid.
Bild said Athletic are a historic club with unique characteristics. Kicker described it as a new home famed for a legendary philosophy and added that Terzic had turned down Inter and Monaco.
Kicker also highlighted Ernesto Valverde’s legacy, saying his name will be remembered for a long time, and suggested the example of Matarazzo could serve as a model for club and coach. Sport.de similarly framed Terzic as replacing a legend who shaped the club for decades.
Sportschau noted that the agreement had been flagged in April, added that Terzic coached Borussia Dortmund for many years and said he is expected to be presented at the start of the new season.
Terzic sought advice from compatriot coaches Hansi Flick and Jupp Heynckes about San Mamés and Athletic’s roots in Euskadi and across Spain. A Sport1 reader poll asked whether this move outside his comfort zone will succeed, with 63% optimistic and 37% unconvinced.
