Gustavo Gómez received his third yellow card in the Conmebol Libertadores against LDU on Wednesday, so he will miss Palmeiras’ quarter-final second leg in Quito next Wednesday.

The caution came at 43 minutes of the first half for halting an Estrada counter-attack, according to Globo.com.

Without their captain in Ecuador, Abel Ferreira could turn to Bruno Fuchs to keep a back three, or pair Murilo with Barboza.

It is a significant loss, with Palmeiras set to decide a semi-final place away from home. Andreas Pereira will at least return in midfield after serving the second match of his Conmebol suspension on Wednesday for a red card in the first leg against Cerro Porteño.

The card rules have changed. Previously, bookings were carried from the preliminaries through the group stage then wiped before the round of 16, with bans only for reds or for players booked in the final group round.

Now they reset only from the semi-final first legs, so yellows up to the quarter-final second legs continue to count. The tweak was introduced by Conmebol for this year’s international competitions. Left-back Arthur is the only other Palmeiras player currently one booking from a ban.
