Leeds United youngster Harry Gray has said goodbye to loan club Rotherham after six months of regular first-team football. Marking the end of his spell, he wrote on Instagram: “Thank u everyone @rotherhamunited for my time there all the best for the future”.

The 17-year-old joined in January on a half-season deal to gain senior EFL minutes while Leeds battled for Premier League survival. He started 20 League One games and scored three goals.

Gray made a bright start with two goals in his first four outings. A hamstring strain in March saw him return to Thorp Arch for treatment, missing around three weeks before rejoining Rotherham in early April.

By then, head coach Matt Hamshaw, who brought him in, had been sacked, but Gray continued to impress under Lee Clark. He scored in a potentially important 2-0 win over Leyton Orient.

Rotherham’s relegation to League Two was confirmed last month. Even so, Gray contributed an assist in Saturday’s 3-2 defeat at Wycombe Wanderers on the final weekend.

He kept close to boyhood club Leeds, spotted in the away end at Old Trafford for a 2-1 win in April and at Wembley for the FA Cup semi-final defeat to Chelsea. He now returns to West Yorkshire for talks on next season, and with Leeds all but securing another year of Premier League football after Friday’s 3-1 win over Burnley, another loan could prove fruitful.
