Earlier this month, there was a lot of controversy surrounding Barcelona superstar Lamine Yamal, with the Spanish national team at the heart of it. The 18-year-old returned from the international break with a hip injury that he is still suffering with, and that evoked strong comments from Hansi Flick.

Flick claimed that officials involved with La Roja knew that Lamine Yamal had an issue prior to the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Bulgaria and Türkiye, during which he played the vast majority of minutes.

Specifically, the Barcelona head coach was not happy with Luis de la Fuente, Spain’s manager. And now the latter has issued a response, although he made it clear that he has little interest in the topic, as per Marca.

“Today, in my homeland, at the moment I don’t remember what Flick said, and I’m not interested.”

Mixed reports on the matter have been documented

In the aftermath of Flick’s comments two weeks ago, sources at the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) claimed that there had been no dialogue with Barcelona in relation to any injury issues for Lamine Yamal, while contrary reports stated that the Spanish national team’s medical staff knew that the teenager had an issue that was having a strong effect on his ability to play.

It’s unlikely that there will be further traction regarding this matter, especially as Lamine Yamal is expected to make his return to action in the next seven days. He could receive the medical green light for Sunday’s La Liga fixture against Real Sociedad, but even if he misses out, he will be included in the squad to face Paris Saint-Germain in Barcelona’s second league phase match in the Champions League.

Should there be no relapses upon his return to action, it is also expected that Lamine Yamal will be involved with Spain during the next international break in October, although it remains to be seen whether Barcelona have a say in this.
