Manchester United and Brighton are reportedly edging closer to finalising the transfer of Carlos Baleba.

The 22-year-old has been keen to join the Red Devils since last summer when he agreed terms with INEOS, but the deal didn’t materialise, as his employers requested figures above £100 million.

Nevertheless, the Cameroonian’s dream could finally be realised, with two clubs currently engaged in advanced negotiations.

Man Utd & Brighton can see the finish line in Carlos Baleba talks

Earlier this week, The Athletic’s David Ornstein broke the news almost out of the blue, revealing that Man Utd and Brighton are working on finalising Baleba’s transfer.

United believe the enforcer is the missing piece in the midfield, having already bought Andrey Santos from Chelsea and Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa, who joined Kobbie Mainoo earlier in the summer.

In the latest video posted on his official YouTube channel, Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano revealed that the two clubs have been negotiating over the past 24 hours, and he expects fresh talks to take place ‘in the next few hours’, as they try to close the deal.

The transfer market guru insists the club-to-club agreement has yet to be reached, but the parties are getting ‘closer and closer’.

Moreover, the Telegraph journalist Luke Edwards believes that if Man Utd’s offer reaches £70 million, Brighton would be prepared to accept it.

Are Man United getting Baleba at a good price?

Earlier this summer, Manchester City may have changed the game by spending an outrageous £116 million on Elliot Anderson.

Tottenham then followed suit by shelling out £85 million on Mateus Fernandes and then £100 million on Sandro Tonali.

In such an inflated market, Man Utd risked being left behind due to the club’s newly adopted cautious approach.

Nevertheless, revamping their midfield by spending a combined £150 million on Santos, Tielemans, and Baleba can be considered a success given the circumstances.

Obviously, Baleba’s underwhelming 2025/26 campaign took its toll on his market value; otherwise, Brighton would have sought a transfer fee north of £100 million.

But if United can unlock the Cameroonian’s version from the 2024/25 season, then this could be a real coup, even at £70 million.
