Manchester United drew a blank in their opening game of the season, failing to find the back of the net in the 2-0 defeat to Hull City at the MKM Stadium. Despite having the likes of Matheus Cunha, Bruno Fernandes and Bryan Mbeumo in the starting XI and bringing on Benjamin Sesko and Marcus Rashford in the second half, Michael Carrick’s team could not penetrate the Tigers’ defence.

The Red Devils have enjoyed excellent form in front of goal since the English manager took charge in January this year. Indeed, this was only the second time in Carrick’s 18-game tenure that United failed to score.

The English giants have been linked with attacking reinforcements all summer, especially with Joshua Zirkzee’s future uncertain. Previous reports have linked Juventus striker Jonathan David with Old Trafford as possible cover for Sesko.

David’s struggles in Serie A

David emerged as one of Europe’s most potent strikers during his five-season stay with Lille. Juventus won the race for his services in the summer of 2025, with the player arriving in Turin as a free agent.

Unfortunately, the 26 year old endured a disappointing debut campaign in Serie A, finishing with eight goals and five assists.

That, however, does not appear to have deterred United, who could do with more firepower in their squad as they prepare to return to the Champions League. An update on the player’s situation has now emerged.

Juventus set David price

According to Hooligan Soccer, United are battling Aston Villa and Arsenal in the race for David this summer. The report states: “According to information obtained by Hooligan Soccer, Aston Villa, Manchester United, and Arsenal are keeping the Canadian forward on their radar as a potential target.”

“Facing this dossier presented to English sides via intermediaries, Juventus are open to putting offers between $41 million and $46 million (£31-34 million) on the table if the right conditions are met. Jonathan David’s personal desire, meanwhile, leans strongly toward playing in England.”

The Bianconeri are not desperate to offload the Canadian, but are open to his departure for the right price. The Serie A giants are ready to retain the player, but will assess any suitable proposal that arrives this summer.

David not a priority for United

The report goes on to name Aston Villa as the frontrunners in the race for David. United, meanwhile, have received the chance to sign the player through intermediaries, but are yet to make a decision on the matter.

The report states: “Sources close to Hooligan Soccer confirm that Manchester United’s recruitment team received the David proposal through agent channels and intermediaries, but have yet to take a concrete step toward securing the player.”

The report goes on to suggest that the Red Devils are assessing David’s suitability to Carrick’s setup and only view him as a secondary option for the No. 9 role. It concludes: “We understand United’s technical staff are analyzing how well the Canadian forward would a) fit the striker profile sought by manager Michael Carrick, and b) be able to adapt into the current system.”

“The presence of other priority names in Carrick’s attacking setup demonstrates that United will not rush this transfer and currently view David as a secondary option.”

Final Thoughts

United could do with another striker this summer to cover for Sesko. However, given David’s struggles in Serie A, it is unlikely that the Red Devils will consider a move for the Canadian, even at a cut-price fee.
