The Brentford midfielder - an unused substitute during the game who was yellow-carded on the sidelines during a chaotic finish - slipped while attempting to jump back over an advertising hoarding after joining in the celebrations with England’s fans and landed awkwardly on his left arm.

Medical staff were immediately called and Henderson received treatment and oxygen before being stretchered away and taken to hospital, with it quickly becoming apparent that he required surgery which would rule him out for the remainder of the tournament.

Henderson stayed behind in Mexico City with a member of England’s medical team rather than travelling back with the rest of the squad to their World Cup training base in Kansas City, but has since returned and undergone a successful operation on his broken left forearm.

“Surgery done! Let’s get ready for the big one Saturday,” Henderson wrote on Instagram on Wednesday, alongside a picture of himself giving the thumbs-up from his hospital bed.

“Thank you to all the staff that looked after me at Kansas City Orthopaedic Institute. Especially the three surgeons who carried out the operation: Dr Kenneth P Unruh, Dr Mark J Winston and Dr Kirk McCullough.”

Henderson, 36, had made only one appearance for England at the World Cup so far, introduced as a late replacement for Elliot Anderson during the 2-0 win over Panama in Group L.

However, the only man ever to feature at seven major tournaments for England is highly valued by manager Thomas Tuchel for his vast experience and leadership qualities, so will stay with the squad in North America ahead of Saturday’s quarter-final tie against Norway in Miami despite now being unavailable for selection.

England are unable to call up a replacement for Henderson, with FIFA rules stating that a newly-injured outfield player can only be replaced at the World Cup up to 24 hours before a team’s opening match of the competition - as the Three Lions did with Trevoh Chalobah taking the place of Tino Livramento.

“A night to remember that’s for sure! What an incredible performance against all the different challenges. So proud to be a part of this special team,” Henderson posted on Instagram on Tuesday in his first message since suffering the injury.

“Thanks for all the support, another big one Saturday.”
