Jorginho, the Flamengo midfielder, has been included in Italy’s preliminary squad and could return after two years out. ESPN reported the inclusion, later confirmed by ge.
Born in Brazil, Jorginho chose to represent Italy and was part of the Euro 2020 triumph, standing out for the Azzurra. He has more than 50 caps.
After three World Cups missed, Roberto Mancini is seeking renewal and is likely to blend younger players with experienced names. He returned in July this year after another failed attempt to reach the World Cup, having previously led from 2018 to 2023, when Jorginho excelled, so there is an expectation he could make the final list.
Between late September and early October, Mancini’s side play their first UEFA Nations League matches against Belgium, Türkiye and France.
In fine form for Flamengo, Jorginho is not alone in eyeing international duty. Pedro and Samuel Lino are on Carlo Ancelotti’s preliminary Brazil list, with the squad due on Wednesday for friendlies against Australia and India, the first FIFA window towards the 2030 World Cup.
Other players such as Plata and Valencia are being considered by Ecuador. Carrascal is in the frame for Colombia, while Arrascaeta, Varela and De La Cruz, from the Rio club, are also being tipped for Uruguay.
