Ferran Torres’ possible departure from Barcelona is starting to look like a real possibility as PSG and Luis Enrique continue to circle the talented Spanish forward.
The Spanish forward has produced consistently under Hansi Flick, averaging around 20 goals across each of the last two seasons and taking advantage of the opportunities handed to him.
As quoted by SPORT, journalist David Bernabeu explained that Barcelona never made a serious move to show Ferran they wanted to renew his contract. He said:
“Barca did not take any step to tell Ferran that they wanted to renew him”
That lack of initiative surprised the 26-year-old, who believed his performances had earned him greater recognition from the club.
Bernabeu added:
“He has averaged 20 goals in the last two seasons and understands that he has made very good use of the windows Hansi Flick opened for him to get into the team.”
The bigger issue, however, may be sporting status.
Ferran could reasonably have wondered whether his performances had earned him the chance to become Barcelona’s main number nine after Robert Lewandowski. The club apparently never saw it that way.
He continued:
“Barca never considered Ferran Torres their number one for the nine. Never. They always thought of him as a complement, a partner, a second striker.”
That position helps explain why Barcelona have continued pursuing a marquee centre-forward rather than building around Ferran.
From Barca’s perspective, there is logic in wanting a specialist striker. However, there is also risk in allowing a productive, versatile and established attacker to feel undervalued.
PSG now appear to be taking advantage of that uncertainty, with talks on the player’s side reportedly well advanced.
Barcelona may publicly insist that nothing is happening, which makes sense while negotiations remain open. However, if Ferran leaves, this cannot be viewed simply as PSG stealing a player.
Barca made a sporting choice. They never truly saw Ferran as the long-term number nine. Now they may have to accept the consequences of that decision, ideally for a transfer fee that reflects just how valuable he has become.
