La Liga will stage a retro-themed weekend across the top two divisions in April, with 38 of 42 clubs wearing classic kits between 10 and 13 April. It corresponds to Matchday 31 in La Liga and Matchday 35 in Segunda.

Marca states that Getafe, Rayo Vallecano and Barcelona have declined to wear retro kits due to logistical reasons, although they will support the wider campaign. No reason has been given for Real Madrid’s decision not to take part.

The initiative is co-ordinated with Madrid fashion week, with each club to reveal its throwback design on 19 March. Referees will wear vintage outfits, broadcasters will use retro on-screen graphics, and sponsors and clubs will add further activations. Clubs will choose designs inspired by iconic moments from their histories.

Retro Matchday is intended to celebrate club histories and the symbols that have shaped generations of fans, linking past and present while adding to the experiences and legacy that bind supporters. The staging is viewed as a platform to project that identity beyond the pitch and into the cultural conversation.

The concept echoes the NFL’s Throwback campaign in the United States. Spain have also released a 2026 World Cup shirt with a throwback feel.
