Lazio have revealed their squad list for the Europa League knockout stages, and Luca Pellegrini has been unsurprisingly left out.
This only comes two days following the Italian left-back’s omission from the Serie A squad list. Hence, Marco Baroni’s domestic selections foretold his European choices. Pellegrini has been dropped from the list and replaced by Elseid Hysaj who earned his spot despite suffering an injury that should rule him out of action for around 40 days.
Pellegrini’s exclusion and Hysaj’s addition were the only changes compared to the club’s group-stage list. Aside from the Juventus loanee, Toma Basic also didn’t make the cut, despite being reintegrated into the Serie A squad. That’s because Gaetano Castrovilli, who was loaned out to Monza recently, wasn’t part of the original European list, so his exit didn’t open up a slot.
Moreover, the club’s January signings Arijon Ibrahimovic, Reda Belahyane and Oliver Provstgaard have also been excluded. While the three youngsters are allowed to play in Serie A since the club can field an unlimited number of U22 players, UEFA has stricter regulations in this regard, and none of these players qualified for the B List, since they aren’t considered Lazio youth products.
Lazio finished the Europa League group stage on top of the 36-team table, and they now await their next opponent in the Round of 16. They will either face the winner in the play-off tie between Ferencvaros and Viktoria Plzen or the one that pits Porto against their crosstown rivals Roma.
