León and Real Salt Lake will battle for one of the four available spots in the Leagues Cup 2026 semifinals. La Fiera arrives in the knockout stage after winning all three of its Phase One matches, while the Utah side advanced as the fourth-place team from the MLS standings.

León’s Perfect Run

León joined Chicago Fire FC as one of only two teams to finish Phase One with a perfect record, collecting all nine possible points against Nashville SC, Orlando City and Inter Miami CF.

Colombian forward Daniel Arcila has been one of the tournament’s biggest revelations and is tied for the tournament lead with four goals. He scored the game-winners against Nashville and Orlando before adding two more in León’s wild 3-2 comeback win over Miami, a result that also secured the top spot in the Liga MX table.

La Fiera are chasing their first trophy since winning the 2023 Concacaf Champions Cup against LAFC. They also have some Leagues Cup history, having defeated Seattle Sounders FC to win the 2021 edition under the competition’s previous format. So yes, León knows what it feels like to lift this trophy — and presumably wouldn’t mind doing it again.

The two clubs have met just once in an official match. That encounter also came in the Leagues Cup, on Aug. 4, 2023, when Real Salt Lake defeated León 3-1 at America First Field.

Different Courses for both Clubs

León have won six consecutive matches across all competitions, while Real Salt Lake enter this matchup on a seven-game winless streak in MLS. Still, RSL showed some defensive stability during Phase One, recording two clean sheets and going 264 consecutive minutes without conceding a goal in the tournament.

Javier Gandolfi could stick with much of the lineup that started against Monterrey over the weekend in Jornada 5, when León picked up a 2-0 victory. Óscar García is expected to remain in goal, while Daniel Arcila, Jordi Cortizo and Diber Cambindo could lead the attack.

Jhohan Romaña is also eligible to play in the Leagues Cup because his suspension came in Liga MX. Because apparently even suspensions have their own tournament-specific fine print.

Real Salt Lake’s Situation

Real Salt Lake finished Phase One with two emphatic victories, first demolishing Atlante FC 4-0 before beating FC Juárez 3-0.

Rookie striker Sergi Solans was instrumental in both wins, scoring in each match as Pablo Mastroeni’s team grabbed the final MLS spot in the quarterfinals.

RSL are still adjusting to life without Zavier Gozo, who recently completed a club-record transfer to Premier League side Crystal Palace. The 19-year-old Homegrown attacker and USMNT prospect left for a fee of reportedly $15 million, which could rise with performance-based add-ons and a sell-on percentage. And while that is a very nice consolation prize for the club’s bank account, RSL still have a soccer game to win.

Real Salt Lake made 10 changes to its starting lineup during Sunday’s 2-1 MLS loss to Orlando City. Rafael Cabral and Sergi Solans were left out because the coaching staff wanted to preserve them for the matchup against León, while Diego Luna, Morgan Guilavogui and Saba Lobjanidze came on during the second half.

Solans enters the match as Real Salt Lake’s leading scorer in 2026. He scored against both Atlante and FC Juárez and has found the net in four consecutive matches across all competitions.

Diego Luna, meanwhile, recorded two assists in the victory over Atlante and remains one of the most important creative pieces in RSL’s attack.

There is also something bigger at stake than simply reaching the semifinals. The top three finishers in the Leagues Cup will qualify for the Concacaf Champions Cup, meaning a victory in this quarterfinal would put the winner just one victory away from securing an international ticket, and the additional revenue that generates.

León are the home side by virtue of their superior ranking and was able to choose their venue in the United States (Leagues Cup isn’t yet so advanced as to allow León to actually play in Mexico). They picked a stadium in Colorado, perhaps hoping the altitude could help?

In any event, the winner will advance to the Leagues Cup semifinals, where it will face the winner of Toluca FC vs. Austin FC. The semifinals will be played Sept. 1-2.
