A slow first half briefly sparked when Karl Darlow beat away a swerving Pascal Gross effort moments before the interval, then Jan Paul van Hecke headed over from close range with the goalkeeper grounded.

After the break Wilfried Gnonto and Anton Stach tested the target from range. Stach later left on a stretcher with a leg issue, and his Germany World Cup hopes could be affected.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin capitalised on a defensive mistake deep into added time for his 15th of the season to clinch it.

Standouts were Darlow, rated eight, with centre-backs Joe Rodon, Sebastiaan Bornauw and Jaka Bijol all on eight, and Ethan Ampadu also eight. Daniel James and James Justin earned seven, while Ao Tanaka was given four.

Stach was marked seven, as were Gnonto and Calvert-Lewin, with Brenden Aaronson on six. From the bench Sean Longstaff, Joel Piroe and Lukas Nmecha were each six. Sam Byram came on at 90 minutes for the final nine minutes of his Elland Road career, unrated.

Manager Daniel Farke received seven after again using James as a makeshift right wing-back and keeping a clean sheet, in line with his stay-in-the-game mantra.
