Leicester City face a seven-game sprint to save Championship status, with Gary Rowett’s side still in the bottom three despite recent defensive gains.

Rowett has taken seven points from seven matches. According to LeicesterMercury.co.uk, his point-per-game return is down on Marti Cifuentes’ and unlikely to keep them up across his 14 contracted fixtures.

Supporters have backed him, yet home defeats at the end of three-game weeks exposed energy issues in a squad whose fitness has been questioned. After 30 without a clean sheet, City now have two in three and excelled at Watford.

Up front, patience has frayed. Patson Daka missed a penalty and a free header in the goalless draw at Watford, and Rowett says City lack the target man he prefers and are not adept at scruffy goals.

Rowett praised players, supporters and club, but accepted the gains are not enough and hopes work after the break turns performances into points. He added that a points deduction has skewed their position and that City must take responsibility.

The run-in splits cleanly. Preston, Sheffield Wednesday and Swansea come first, then four high-stakes games, home to Hull and Millwall, either side of trips to Portsmouth and Blackburn.

Fifty points is the usual safety mark, though Rowett’s Birmingham went down with 50 two years ago. City are on 39 and probably need four wins. Rivals are in form, with only Portsmouth worse since he arrived, while Oxford, Blackburn and West Brom have improved and Charlton may now be safe.
