Sunderland non-executive director Leo Pearlman has congratulated David Bruce on becoming Sheffield Wednesday’s chief executive and welcomed Arise Capital Partners’ takeover. In a LinkedIn message, he praised the appointment and the new owners’ priorities.
Bruce left his role as Sunderland’s chief business officer last month amid a wider organisational restructure before being confirmed at Hillsborough.
Pearlman described Wednesday as a proper club with history, identity and support. He said the play-off semi-final at Hillsborough delivered one of the best atmospheres he has experienced, a sign of what the club is and can be.
He lauded Bruce’s work in reconnecting Sunderland with its city and supporters, rebuilding bonds, restoring pride and putting fans at the centre. He noted similarities between Sunderland and Wednesday as proud, working-class cities with deeply rooted clubs and fanbases that demand authenticity and connection, which he believes Bruce understands.
Pearlman also credited Arise Capital Partners for making fan relations the top priority after their takeover, arguing they could not have made a better hire. He added that he was sure Bruce and Wednesday would be back where they belong before too long, alongside Sunderland in the English Premier League.
