Liam Cooper has signed a one-year contract to return to Sheffield Wednesday as the club enters a new era under a US consortium, according to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk.
Cooper captained Leeds United to the Championship title under Marcelo Bielsa. He left Elland Road after 284 appearances, including 64 in the Premier League.
He joined CSKA Sofia before agreeing a short-term deal with Wednesday in November last year, making 14 Championship appearances as off-field issues resulted in administration and relegation to League One.
Cooper said he was delighted to be part of the reset, praising the new owners’ ideas and business know-how. He added that with the right people in place the club can look forward, noted more than 23,000 season tickets have been sold and said he cannot wait for the campaign to start.
The club’s sporting director said early feedback from players and staff underlined Cooper’s impact in the dressing room. He called Cooper a leader in difficult circumstances, a mentor to a young group and a winner who can contribute on and off the pitch this season.
