"I am currently undergoing treatment for cancer," Dalglish wrote onsocial media.

"Unlike my mobile phone use, the treatment is going well.

"Ideally, this would have remained private because that's the way it should be, but my useless technology skills have forced my hand.

"Obviously I did not mean to make this matter public so I would appreciate it if the privacy of my family and myself are respected.

"As ever, thank you to the wonderful medical staff who have shown incredible care and discretion, not just for me but for many, many others. They are a credit to themselves."

Dalglish is Scotland's record appearance maker (102) and joint-leading scorer (30) of all time, which came alongside a decorated club career with Celtic and Liverpool.

He scored 173 goals in 338 games for Celtic, winning four league titles, before a British transfer record £440,000 move to Liverpool in 1977.

At Anfield, 'King' Kenny's honours included three European Cups and six league titles among 20 trophies, and two FWA Footballer of the Year awards.

He later led Liverpool to 10 trophies across two spells as manager, as well as guidingBlackburn Rovers to the Premier League
