Winger looked set to join Premier League rivals
Liverpool have announced the signing of Victor Munoz as their first arrival of the summer transfer window.
The winger joins in a £35million deal from La Liga side Osasuna, after the Reds triggered the release clause in the forward’s contract.
It had been previously reported that Newcastle United were closing in on an agreement to land the Spain international, who is part of his country’s World Cup squad, but a late Liverpool hijack sees him sign for Andoni Iraola’s Merseyside outfit.
It was revealed late on Wednesday night that Liverpool had made a move for Munoz, who had already completed a medical at Spain’s World Cup camp in Tennessee.
The 22-year-old has signed a long-term contract at Anfield, and will join up with his new colleagues after the conclusion of this summer’s tournament.
He played 34 times for Spanish side Osasuna this season, scoring seven goals and adding five assists across all competitions.
A product of Real Madrid’s youth system, it is believed that Los Blancos will earn a hefty sell-on fee from the figure that Liverpool have paid Osasuna.
He was previously part of the famous ‘La Masia’ setup at Barcelona, before moving to the Spanish capital.
Munoz becomes the first arrival under new manager Iraola, who succeeded Arne Slot in the dugout after the Dutchman was sacked a couple of weeks ago.
He follows Jeremy Jacquet, the Rennes defender, through the Anfield entrance, after the Frenchman was confirmed to have signed for the club back in January.
