Dan Burn's dance moves light up Newcastle dressing room after Carabao Cup win
Newcastle United defeated Liverpool to finally secure glory and win the Carabao Cup in a 2-1 victory at Wembley.
Newcastle had not won a major domestic trophy in 70 years but Dan Burn's bullet header and a stunning Alexander Isak finish secured Eddie Howe's side victory despite a late scare after Federico Chiesa's goal, following a VAR check.
Arne Slot's side had found themselves 2-0 down and set up a grand stand finish when Chiesa's goal was belatedly given after a two-minute VAR check.
But the Reds could not bounce back from a demoralising penalty shootout defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League, and the wait for a first trophy under Arne Slot will rely on them holding on in the Premier League title race.
Follow all the reaction to Liverpool vs Newcastle in the Carabao Cup final, below:
Let’s face it: in football, it’s often the case that major cup finals do not make for the best games of the season. For every 2022 World Cup final between France and Argentina, there will be a dozen examples of tight and tense contests; far from the ideal conditions to produce season-defining performances.
For Mohamed Salah, a scorer of 32 goals in what looks to be a record-breaking campaign for Liverpool, that was again the case in Sunday’s Carabao Cup final defeat to Newcastle United. For a forward who is on his way to recording one of the greatest individual seasons of all time in the Premier League came the anomaly of Wembley: a match where the 32-year-old did not have a shot or create a chance in Liverpool’s 2-1 defeat.
But is it fair to say Salah hasn’t delivered in cup finals for Liverpool, and Egypt? Let’s take a look…

Virgil van Dijk believes Liverpool have to use their two defeats to remind them how hard every victory is as they look for the 16 points that will make it mathematically certain they regain the Premier League crown.
“If you realise that if you win five games - obviously that's a very difficult job - you're going to be champions of England,” he said.
“If you keep these things in your mind it also can benefit you for working hard, to keep going in difficult moments, because I can guarantee you right now all those games that we have to coming up there will be so many difficult moments and if you're prepared to suffer, whether it is 1-0 down, 2-0, whatever, you have to keep going because you can see the end and you work so hard for it each and every day.”

Ant and Dec declared Newcastle’s Carabao Cup win over Liverpool as the “best day of our lives” during wild celebration scenes.
The Geordie duo, who are lifelong Newcastle supporters, were in the stands at Wembley on Sunday (16 March) to see their club beat Liverpool 2-1, ending a 70-year wait for a piece of major silverware.
The TV presenters shared a video to their Instagram account celebrating the team’s win.
Both screaming “We did it”, Dec then declares: “It is the best day of our lives, apart from our wedding and kids.”

The Carabao Cup had been lifted by Bruno Guimaraes and Kieran Trippier, Eddie Howe drenched in alcohol by Joelinton and the black-and-white hordes were starting to disperse when a manager reflected on a historic first. Not the victorious one, though. “It took us seven, eight, nine months to lose twice in a row,” said Arne Slot. It is perhaps not a statistic to echo through the ages like Newcastle’s 70-year wait for domestic silverware or the 56-year gap between claiming any major honour.
It was nevertheless a way of illustrating Liverpool’s consistency this season.

Arne Slot’s favourite players looked fatigued in their Carabao Cup final defeat at Wembley and the manager must learn some vital lessons from a campaign losing momentum
