Manchester United suffer fresh injury blow as Dorgu returns early from international duty | OneFootball

Manchester United could return from the international break with fresh concerns over two important first-team players after Bruno Fernandes and Patrick Dorgu encountered fitness problems on international duty.

Fernandes has already missed Portugal’s Nations League meeting with Norway after arriving in camp carrying an injury. Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus said the United captain had been playing through pain for around three matches and chose not to risk him in Oslo.

Jesus is nevertheless hopeful Fernandes can recover in time for Portugal’s next Nations League fixture against Denmark on Thursday. The midfielder completed the full 90 minutes in Portugal’s 1-0 win over Wales before being left out against Norway.

Dorgu’s situation is more immediate. The 21-year-old was forced off after around 30 minutes of Denmark’s 2-0 victory over Wales on Sunday after appearing to feel discomfort in his left hamstring.

Denmark boss Brian Riemer subsequently confirmed that Dorgu will leave the squad and return to Manchester, with another player set to be called up for the remainder of the international window.

The defender has featured in six of United’s seven matches this season, making his latest injury another issue for Michael Carrick to monitor ahead of the club’s return to Premier League action.

Dorgu’s absence also means he will miss Denmark’s upcoming Nations League meeting with Portugal, where Fernandes could potentially make his return.

There was better news for another United player in the Netherlands camp. Joshua Zirkzee was named in the Dutch matchday squad for the first time since November 2024 after being called up as a replacement for Brian Brobbey, although he remained an unused substitute in the 2-1 win over Serbia.

United will also have an interest in Monday’s Belgium-France meeting, with Senne Lammens and Youri Tielemans in contention for Belgium and Leny Yoro potentially set to make his senior France debut following his first call-up.
