Barcelona are hoping to offload Marc-Andre ter Stegen this summer, although they are still waiting for his expected exit to go through. An agreement was reached with Ajax a couple of weeks ago, but the wait for the deal to be finalised goes on.
It was at the start of July that Ajax made a move to sign ter Stegen on loan for the 2026-27 season, and quickly, an agreement with Barcelona was reached. Despite this, both clubs are still waiting for everything to be finalised, and in the meantime, the Germany international has been involved in the first team matters – including making an appearance in the recent 4-1 victory over CE Europa in a behind closed doors friendly.
That was expected to be ter Stegen’s final appearance for Barcelona ahead of moving to Ajax, but the deal to take him to Amsterdam is still being held up. This has meant Hansi Flick and his coaching staff have been forced to decide whether to take the veteran goalkeeper to their pre-season training camp in England, and it’s now been confirmed that they have ruled in favour of including him in the squad.
Ter Stegen is one of the two senior goalkeepers (alongside Wojciech Szczesny) to be included in the squad, which does make sense given that Flick will be without the services of starter Joan Garcia. The former Espanyol man will return late after being part of the Spain squad that won the 2026 World Cup, so his place has effectively been taken by ter Stegen.
There are four days to go until Barcelona take on Birmingham City in their first official pre-season friendly, and it remains to be seen whether ter Stegen will still be at the club by the time that match comes around – if so, there is every chance that he plays at St Andrew’s.
