Marseille president Stéphane Richard has confirmed that Grégory Lorenzi will become the club’s new sporting director, speaking to BFM Marseille at an event on Tuesday.
“Yes, the name currently circulating in the press is the correct one, I can confirm that,” Richard said. “It will be made official in the coming hours.”The former Brest sporting director had emerged as one of the most highly regarded executives in French football following Brest’s recent rise, including qualification for the UEFA Champions League under Éric Roy two seasons ago.
According to L’Équipe, however, Lorenzi had initially been close to joining OGC Nice before Marseille accelerated talks. An agreement had reportedly already been signed with the Riviera club, dependent on Nice maintaining their Ligue 1 status. Les Aiglons will face Saint-Étienne on Friday in the final promotion/relegation play-off at the Allianz Riviera after the first leg finished 0-0.
