Mason Greenwood has completed his move to Fenerbahce after a late rupture with Atletico Madrid, with ESPN reporting the Spanish club felt disrespected when the forward went silent during negotiations.
Atletico are said to have pulled out over a lack of professionalism from the player’s camp, with Diego Simeone’s calls and messages going unanswered for two days. The club had reportedly viewed the 24-year-old as Antoine Griezmann’s successor, but doubts over his desire to play in Madrid quickly grew.
With Atletico stepping aside, Fenerbahce sealed a four-year deal for the English forward after two prolific seasons in France. Greenwood hit 26 goals in all competitions for Marseille last season.
His unveiling in Türkiye drew major fanfare, with the Istanbul side targeting him as the marquee addition to finally overtake Galatasaray in the title race.
The transfer package totals €39m, to be paid in three equal instalments across three years. Greenwood’s net salary in Türkiye has been put at between seven and eight million euros per year. Atletico’s overall €45m proposal was higher, but personal terms in Istanbul were considered more appealing.
Fenerbahce now turn to Champions League qualifying later this month, when they face Polish side Gornik Zabrze.
