Michael Gerlinger has positioned Matthieu Louis-Jean at the heart of Olympique Lyonnais’ recruitment, crediting his authority and impact since early 2024.

At seminars between Lyon and Botafogo in early 2024, Gerlinger was struck by Louis-Jean’s presence. “It was as if his expertise carried authority over the others,” he said, speaking to L’Équipe.

Captivated, the OL chief executive moved to have every Eagle group signing approved by the sporting director.

The turning point came during the perilous 2025 summer window. “If we had got the summer 2025 window wrong, we would have had very serious problems,” he said, praising Louis-Jean’s resolve under constraints and saying he handled the process on his own with distinction.

Today the hierarchy works in complete harmony, and there is a WhatsApp group, “les 4 mousquetaires”, linking Gerlinger, Louis-Jean, Sudres and Congré.

“I need to work with people I like, and Matthieu is now a friend,” Gerlinger said. He added that a calmer, more relaxed climate now naturally draws players towards Olympique Lyonnais.
