Real Sociedad honoured their captain and world champion Mikel Oyarzabal at Anoeta during the season opener, as he presented the World Cup won this summer in the United States with Spain. The Eibar-born forward was warmly applauded from the stands.
According to AS, there were also whistles and the Bultzada supporters' group stayed outside until the tribute ended in protest, showing banners that called for official status for the Euskadi national team. The mixed reaction framed an otherwise celebratory moment.
Team-mates from Real Sociedad and Espanyol formed a guard of honour for the No 10, who stepped to the centre circle to offer the trophy to the crowd.
Oyarzabal finished as Spain's top scorer at the tournament with five goals, matching the historical record at a World Cup with Butragueño and David Villa.
He was also applauded at the Santiago Bernabéu on Wednesday, alongside Marc Cucurella, who received his tribute as a Real Madrid player.
