AS Monaco will not exercise their option to sign Simon Adingra permanently from Sunderland, Nice-Matin reports, with the clause thought to be between €5m and €10m, roughly £4.3m to £8.5m. Some estimates at the time put it closer to £17m.
Adingra joined Monaco on loan in January and made 17 appearances in all competitions, scoring three and providing two assists.
Used largely as a wing-back, he showed attacking threat but his defensive work was questioned, and his form fluctuated between strong displays and quieter outings.
Monaco’s stance means the 24-year-old Ivory Coast international is set to return to Wearside this summer, where Florent Ghisolfi and Régis Le Bris will decide his next steps. Sunderland must weigh whether to reintegrate him or seek another solution.
His loan did not affect his national-team standing. He was named in Ivory Coast’s World Cup squad and came on in the 74th minute of their 2-1 defeat to Germany, though he missed last season’s AFCON campaign.
